Our Three Point Strategy

Learn More About Our Approach Below

*

Help People Gain Access to Care Now and Work to Preserve Those Gains

We cannot let 5 million Californians lose their current health insurance. We oppose the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), until it can be replaced with single payer.

  • We are actively participating in coalition efforts
  • We are providing opportunities for our members to have their voices heard by their elected officials
*

Support Improvements To Our Health Care System That Are Achievable In The Short-Term

We will support legislation that aligns with our core values and gets us closer to a health care system that works for all of us. We also support key bills sponsored by our coalition partners.

Current Legislation We Endorse:

  • SB 562 (Lara): The Californians for a Healthy California Act
  • AB 14 (Gomez, Levine): The California DISCLOSE Act
  • SB 54 ( De León): The California Values Act
  • SB 17 (Hernandez): Prescription Drug Pricing Transparency
  • SB 651 (Allen): Petition Disclosure Act
  • AB 595 (Wood): Protecting Consumers When Health Plans & Insurers Merge

In the past, we’ve supported:

  • SB 810: Single-Payer Health Care Bill would have created a private-public partnership that provides universal coverage by redirecting the funds Californians already spend on health care.
  • SB 1010: Drug Pricing Transparency would have required drug companies to provide advanced notice of drug price increases and health plans to disclose the percentage of premiums spent on prescription drugs.
  • AB 72: End Surprise Medical Bills was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown and will allow consumers to only be responsible for their in-network costs, preventing unanticipated bills from medical providers and services that they didn’t choose or have control over.
  • SB 4: Health for All Kids was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in October 2015, expanding health coverage to all children in CA, regardless of immigration status.

Create A Roadmap To A Publicly Financed, Privately Delivered Single Payer Health Care System In California And The Nation

We will work with our partners to create a legislative pathway to achieve a publicly, non-profit single-payer health care system in California and the nation.

  • While the efforts to pass further reform in Washington, DC appear blocked for now, California’s chances of moving to single payer have increased. Our state leaders are now motivated to consider comprehensive solutions to the healthcare crisis, including single payer.
  • SB 562 Californians for a Healthy California Act (Senator Lara - Long Beach) was introduced in Sacramento on February 17, 2017. Additional bill language will be available in late March. The bill will state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation that would establish a comprehensive universal single-payer health care coverage program and a health care cost control system for the benefit of all residents of the state.
